At Guildhouse, we believe education extends far beyond the classroom. This term, our students brought global politics to life as we hosted a dynamic and thought-provoking Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in the heart of Bloomsbury.

Engaging with Real-World Global Issues

This year’s conference centred on two highly relevant and challenging committees:

UNHCR – Global Response to the Venezuelan Refugee Crisis, with particular focus on the role of the United States.

UNHRC – Limiting Civic Space and Addressing Threats to Democratic Freedoms.

Both topics required students to engage deeply with contemporary international affairs, analyse complex political contexts, and practise diplomatic negotiation. Throughout the day, delegates demonstrated impressive critical thinking, balancing national interests with collaborative problem-solving.

A Collaborative, International Environment

The conference welcomed 45 students from across our wider school community, including:

  • 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½
  • The Worthgate School
  • MPW London
  • LSI

The mix of schools created a vibrant and diverse debating environment, reflecting the international outlook that defines Guildhouse. Students collaborated, challenged one another respectfully, and built connections beyond their own campuses.

Exceptional Leadership and Achievement

Across both committees, debates were conducted with maturity, confidence and academic rigour. Delegates showcased strong research skills and persuasive public speaking, while maintaining the professionalism expected in formal diplomatic settings.

We were particularly proud of the leadership demonstrated by our committee chairs:

  • Silvia (91³ÉÈ˵¼º½)
  • Defne (The Worthgate School)

Their preparation, composure and ability to guide complex discussions were central to the success of the event.

Congratulations also to Homachi from The Worthgate School, who received the Outstanding Delegate Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions.

Behind the Scenes

The conference was organised by Christopher Mattingly, Teacher of History, Politics and International Relations at Guildhouse. The event was made possible through the valued support of:

  • Verity Hadden, Deputy Head – Academic (91³ÉÈ˵¼º½)
  • Mark Hopkinson, Pastoral Director and Teacher of Humanities (The Worthgate School)
  • Farhana Yasmin, Front of House Coordinator (91³ÉÈ˵¼º½)

Their collaboration ensured the day ran seamlessly from planning through to execution.

Developing Future Leaders

Beyond the debates themselves, the conference offered students an invaluable opportunity to develop skills essential for university and future careers:

  • Public speaking
  • Negotiation and diplomacy
  • Critical thinking
  • Collaborative working
  • Global awareness

Events such as this embody the Guildhouse ethos academically ambitious, internationally minded, and committed to nurturing confident, articulate young leaders.

We look forward to hosting future conferences and continuing to provide opportunities that challenge our students to think globally and lead with integrity.

Evelyn Dove

was a black British musician who rose in popularity and fame in the 1920s and in 1925 Evelyn became the first woman of African heritage to be broadcast on BBC Radio. From there she went on to have a very successful broadcasting career. Evelyn Dove became one of radio’s most popular vocalists and throughout the war effort her voice often reached the soldiers overseas, solidifying her impact on broadcasting during a crucial period in British ³ó¾±²õ³Ù´Ç°ù²â.ÌýÌý

She hosted many radio shows independently and collaboratively. Perhaps her most successful was the 1945 show ‘Serenade in Sepia’, which was hosted alongside Trinidadian folk singer Edric Connor. Its immense popularity led to the show running for 45 weeks and being broadcast on television.Ìý

Despite her success and rapid rise to fame Evelyn Dove’s career trajectory was not what she envisioned as a young, middle-class, girl growing up in London.ÌýÌý

Born in London, in 1901 to a white mother and Sierra Leonian father, Evelyn’s upbringing was an affluent one. She dreamed of a career in opera, so much so that she trained her vocals as a contralto at the Royal Academy of Music. However, her dreams of dazzling crowds under the blinding lights of the opera house were short lived.

Racial prejudices within the entertainment industry made finding work extremely difficult. Evelyn instead found work in the jazz and cabaret sectors of the entertainment industry, which she found to be much more accepting.

From there her success snowballed and Evelyn Dove toured across the UK, Europe and the USA. Despite her growing success she was still forced to play a role and so Evelyn, her back up dancers and singers preformed under the name ‘Evelyn Dove and her plantation creoles’ in order to conform to their white audiences expectations of black musicians and entertainers of the time.

Despite her trailblazing career, success and impact on British broadcasting Evelyn Dove was relatively unknown by the time of her death in 1987. Posthumously, her story and achievements gained visibility with the publishing of Stephen Bourne’s 2016 biography Evelyn Dove: Britain’s Black Cabaret Queen. Evelyn also featured as a ‘Google Doodle’ on the 117th anniversary of her birth, in 2019

Margaret Busby

Margaret Busby first made waves in 1967 when she became the UK’s youngest publisher and first black female one, opening Allison and Busby. Busby’s career developed rapidly as she continued reaching new heights, cementing her position as a pioneering figure across the literary landscape.ÌýÌý

Throughout her long career in the literary arts, Busby has not only worn the hat of a publisher but of a writer, critic, activist, broadcaster and editor. She chaired the judges panel for the Booker Prize in 2020 and in her battle to diversify the publishing industry established a scholarship at SOAS University, for black female students studying African Literature.

Busby’s critically acclaimed anthology ‘Daughters of Africa’ was released in 1992. For this, she curated a collection of writing produced by women of African descent. Some of the texts dated all the way back to the Ancient Egyptians, while others were more contemporary. Her motivation was to draw attention to the fact there are lots of black female writers producing literature and that the reading pool is much wider than people realise. More than 25 years later, in 2019, Busby released a follow up to this anthology titled ‘New Daughters of Africa’.

In 2023 she’s still making waves, having recently been appointed as the president of ENGLISH PEN. The organisation is a subset of PEN International and focuses on protecting human rights and freedom of expression and speech within the English-speaking literary community. It seeks to defend writers who face censorship or persecution due to their work. Margaret Busby’s appointment emphasizes her dedication to protecting human rights and making the literary arts a diverse and inclusive space.

Women in Engineering Day: The Facts! /uncategorised/women-in-engineering-day-the-facts/ Tue, 20 Jun 2023 08:44:02 +0000 /?p=995877 Women in engineering have changed the world, despite being underrepresented in the field. We looked at facts surrounding female engineers.

Women in engineering have changed the world, despite being largely underrepresented in the field. From Edith Clarke to the women who are making real world change right now, the number of women in engineering is slowly growing, but more efforts are needed to accelerate this growth.

International Women in Engineering Day offers us all the chance to consider the barriers faced by women in Engineering and those looking to enter into it.

In 1919 World War One ended and Britain rejoiced as men began returning home after years at war. However, women who’d been working on developing munitions, building aircrafts and tanks suddenly found themselves being ousted. They were being pushed back into the role of a homemaker. This led to , a charity promoting the inclusion of women in engineering, being founded.

Since then, things have drastically improved for women hoping to pursue engineering:

A on engineering students revealed 20% of engineers graduating today are women, yet almost half of them choose not to enter the industry.

Understanding what’s stopping them from achieving this is important, because when we diversify an industry, we pave the way for creativity to seep in. By encouraging more women to become engineers, we create a wider pool of individuals who have unique and diverse experiences. This means there’s more opportunity for new perspectives to bring effective collaboration, innovation and advancement to the industry.Ìý

Whilst there is still work to do to break down the barriers women face when it comes to a career in engineering, the number of women in engineering is on the rise! Now, more than ever, young women are encouraged to pursue their love of STEM fields.

Here at CATS Cambridge, we offer high quality teaching that reflects our pursuit of forward-thinking academic excellence. We encourage all our students to be curious and thoughtful learners and offer a wide and varied curriculum that supports student in pursuing their future goals.
